How to Set Up and Optimize Your Google Business Profile

If someone in Seguin Googles what you do, your Google Business Profile is probably the first thing they see. Not your website. Not your Facebook page. That little box with your hours, photos, and reviews.

Getting it right matters more than most business owners realize. Here's how to set it up so it actually helps you get customers.

Step 1: Claim Your Profile (If You Haven't Already)

Go to business.google.com and search for your business. If it shows up, click "Claim this business." If it doesn't, click "Add your business."

Google might ask you to verify by phone, postcard, or email. Just follow whatever they tell you. This usually takes a day or two, but it's worth the wait.

Step 2: Fill Out Every Single Field

I know it's tedious, but Google rewards complete profiles. Don't leave anything blank that you can reasonably fill out.

Essential information:

  • Business name (exactly as it appears on your storefront)
  • Complete address (make sure it matches what's on your website)
  • Phone number (use your main business line, not your personal cell)
  • Hours (including holiday hours if they're different)
  • Website URL
  • Business category (be specific — "Italian Restaurant" instead of just "Restaurant")

Pro tip for Seguin businesses: If you serve customers outside Seguin, list your service area. Google lets you add surrounding cities like New Braunfels, San Marcos, or Austin if that's where you do business.

Step 3: Add Photos That Actually Matter

Most businesses upload a couple photos and call it done. That's a mistake. Photos are what make people want to visit you instead of your competitor.

What to include:

  • Your storefront (so people know they're in the right place)
  • Inside your business (make it look welcoming)
  • Your products or work samples
  • Your team (people like doing business with people they can see)

Photo tips:

  • Take them during the day with good lighting
  • Keep them current — if you remodeled, upload new photos
  • Add at least 5-10 photos to start, then add new ones every month

Step 4: Write a Description That Helps People Understand What You Do

Your business description isn't a place to stuff keywords. It's a place to tell people what you do and why they should choose you.

Good description: "Family-owned Mexican restaurant serving authentic tacos, enchiladas, and fresh margaritas. We've been part of the Seguin community for 15 years, using recipes passed down from our grandmother in San Antonio."

Bad description: "Best Mexican food restaurant Seguin TX authentic tacos burritos enchiladas catering family-friendly."

Step 5: Set Up Google Posts

Most Seguin businesses don't know this feature exists. Google Posts let you share updates, events, offers, and news directly on your profile. They show up when people search for you.

Use them for:

  • Weekly specials or new menu items
  • Shop hours during holidays
  • Community events you're participating in
  • New services or products

Important: Google Posts expire after 7 days (events expire on the event date), so you need to keep adding new ones.

Step 6: Monitor and Respond to Reviews

This one's not optional. Reviews are the first thing people read when they find your business. How you respond to them (good and bad) tells customers what kind of business owner you are.

For good reviews: Say thank you and mention something specific about their visit.

For bad reviews: Respond publicly with empathy and offer to fix the problem privately. Don't get defensive. Other people are watching how you handle criticism.

Step 7: Keep Your Information Updated

Your Google Business Profile isn't a set-it-and-forget-it thing. Update your hours for holidays. Add new photos regularly. Post updates about what's happening at your business.

Google rewards active profiles with better visibility. A profile that gets updated weekly shows up higher than one that hasn't been touched in six months.

Why This Works for Seguin Businesses

When someone new to town searches "coffee shop near me" or "auto repair Seguin," Google shows them the businesses with complete, active profiles first. Being thorough here means being found.

Plus, a well-maintained Google Business Profile builds trust. People can see you're a real business that pays attention to details. In a smaller community like ours, that reputation matters.
